AMSP

AMSP workshop was conducted on 27th August 2018 at Central K.L. Wig Centre for Medical Education & Technology, AIIMS, New Delhi. Antibiotics policy for each hospital (Including Surgical prophylaxis), tool for antimicrobial consumption and point prevalence for cultures and formulary restriction prescription audit & feedback were discussed in workshop.

AMSP workshop was conducted on 19th Nov 2018 at India International Center (IIC), New Delhi. Workshop included the AMSP practices in basic and clinical microbiology. The Setting up of AMSP in hospital was demonstrated and AMSP Metrics were explained. Centres from AMR network shared their institutional experiences

Since inappropriate use of antibiotics is rampant in India, there is an urgent need to improve antibiotic use in hospitals which can be achieved through implementation of good Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs.

These programs help clinicians improve the quality of patient care and improve patient safety through increased infection cure rates, reduced treatment failures, and increased frequency of correct prescribing for therapy and prophylaxis. A strong Antibiotic Stewardship Programs (ASPs) can both optimize the treatment of infections and reduce adverse events associated with antibiotic use. ICMR carried out a study across 20 hospitals in India which showed that written AMSP guidelines were available with only with 40 % hospitals who participated in the survey.

There is a need to strengthen AMSP and infection control policies in the health care institutions across country and ICMR has developed a guidance document on AMSP and infection control which can be utilised by health care institutions to strengthen their AMSP and infection control procedures. Four workshops were conducted across the country in Chennai Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai to train teams from 32 hospitals across the country.
